Background
I was approached by a client with a problem with indexing spam pages. His site was infected after a hack. In total, more than 1.3 million spammed URLs were indexed, which led to a significant drop in organic traffic.The task was to remove all the infected URLs from Google's index and recover the site's search ranking. Complicating the problem was the fact that the spam addresses consisted of Japanese characters, and it was impossible to determine their pattern.
The process
To solve this problem, I used ChatGPT, Spreadsheets and the Google Indexing Removal Tool. I asked ChatGPT to make me a full list of the basic Japanese characters. There are 3,000 variations of them. I connected them with the domain name to get a list of URLs with all the possible prefix variations. After that, I sent these 3000 URLs to be deleted using a special Google Chrome extension.
To expedite the reindexing process for normal pages, I utilized the Google Indexing API to submit all of their URLs.To contribute to the deindexing of spam pages, I suggested my client implement a 410 code response for his 404 page.
The result
My actions resulted in the complete removal of infected pages from SERP within just 3 days, and it took 2 months for deindexing spam pages and the ranking to fully recover.
